SMO 254 washers are crafted from the SMO 254 alloy, a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel known for its well-balanced composition. This includes notable amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which contribute to its outstanding corrosion resistance and strength. Typically, the alloy contains about 19.5–20.5% chromium, 17.5–18.5% nickel, around 6–6.5% molybdenum, low carbon, and a small percentage of nitrogen, with iron making up the rest. This unique composition results in a material with impressive tensile strength of approximately 650–690 megapascals, good yield strength near 300 megapascals, high ductility, and excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive environments.
